774th Street Quartet.

The quartet of Aram Shelton, alto saxophone and Bb clarinet; Guillermo Gregorio, alto saxophone and Bb clarinet; Keefe Jackson, tenor saxophone and bass clarinet; and Thomas Mejer, contrabass saxophone.

The 774th St Quartet formed in a place that does no longer exist - a corner above a much beloved deli in Chicago's Ukrainian village. At the time Thomas Mejer was living in Chicago as part of Luzerne, Switzerland's artistic exchange program and became acquainted with the wonderfully steadfast composer, saxophonist and clarinetist Guillermo Gregorio, and the two youngsters Aram Shelton and Keefe Jackson. Filling a need for a new saxophone quartet, the strict adherence to the instrumentation was soon eschewed as the wider range of orchestration that was the result of substituting their brass-reeded instruments with clarinets was too enticing to deny.

In a short time, each member contributed compositions and the quartet developed material that has since been released by Bloody Murder Records, a burgeoning label led by George Hansen.
