Shelton Lonberg-Holm Rosaly: Resounder

Shelton / Lonberg-Holm / Rosaly : Resounder

Resounder is a hybrid improvised / electroacoustic album by Aram Shelton, Fred Lonberg-Holm and Frank Rosaly. Long time collaborators through the Chicago sextet Fast Citizens (Delmark), this album is a clear departure from their previous work together. Completely improvised, the acoustic material was recorded in a half day session at MINBAL Studio in Chicago. In November of that year, Shelton processed certain parts of the tracks, with the intent of enhancing the material, as opposed to covering up or masking it, while keeping an ear towards the musicality of the performance by the players. Broken Trap Ensemble

Broken Trap Ensemble is a group built from the extremely fertile Bay Area creative music scene of late. Aram Shelton, Teddy Rankin-Parker, Kristina Dutton & Daniel Pearce are all familiar names to the west coast improv scene (and Chicago as ¾ of them spent time there as well) and this release should help make them all more visible on a larger scale. Henry Kaiser: The Celestial Squid

Henry Kaiser, the Celestial Squid
Henry Kaiser, the Celestial Squid

This record came out of an intense full day recording session at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley California.  The first track features a solo by Aram Shelton that directs the ten piece band into a new course to the outer limits.

With throbbing electric basslines and lockstep polyrhythms underpinning skronky guitars and caterwauling reeds, the ensuing thicket subtly recalls the Downtown sound of Bill Laswell’s 1980’s productions. – All About Jazz Continue reading “Henry Kaiser: The Celestial Squid”

An avant/modern jazz trio that thrive in, and out of conventional structure, the Oakland based Ton Trio II  features Shelton on alto saxophone; Scott Brown, bass; Alex Vittum, drums.    Drawing from Shelton’s bright and even folk-like compositions, the trio weaves continuously through melody, rhythm, and texture with written parts that serve as entry points for spacious improvisations. Ton Trio II was formed by Shelton in late 2012 as the newest vehicle for his small ensemble avant jazz writing, heard before in groups including Arrive (482 Music and CleanFeed); Cylinder (CleanFeed); and the Fast Citizens (Delmark).   Continue reading “Ton Trio II: On and On”
