Since 2002 they've been making music that blends structural ideas and complete freedom with the instrumentation of saxophone, drums & computers. Shelton plays saxophone and uses Max/ MSP for live sample-based processing. Crawford plays a wide variety of percussion and drums and uses the computer for synthesis. Over the years they've developed an innate sense of each others musical sensibilities, culminating in their most recent album Broad Oration. This album, recorded in the summer of 2005 and mixed in the fall, is an up-to-date documentation of their particular style of music, which was first heard on their debut album 'How to Create Words' (482 Music, 2003). Their aesthetic allows for exploration of and influence by a variety of musics from electronic sound design to open improvisational jazz. A “focused symbiosis of breath and circuitry” - Julian Crowley, the Wire “the electronics work with and enhance the playing rather than standing outside it… How To Create Words is satisfying and intriguing enough that it’s thoroughly enjoyable even if you’ve never bought an issue of The Wire.” - Ian Mathers, Stylus “Grey Ghost… have been developing their own methodology; listening to their debut album, How to Create Words (482 Music), it's clear they're on to something” - Peter Margasak, the Chicago Reader “How to Create Worlds makes me want to understand jazz better so I can more accurately explain just why the album is so good” - Justin Kownacki, Splendid |
